Over the last couple of months I've seen a certain fly name crop up on various forums across the world - it's called a SupaPupa. It seems to be taking both the USA and Eastern Europe by storm.
But, let's clear something up before we go any further.
If you've Googled "SupaPupa" since my email last night, you've probably landed on an 8% Imperial DIPA - all mango, pineapple and citrus, dangerously drinkable, and (I can personally confirm, purely in the interests of research) it's pretty good:

The SupaPupa I'm referring to is a fly - a Swedish pattern developed back in 1977 by fly-tyer Lennart Bergquist, who was on Norway's River Rena studying hatching caddis and started developing a swimming pupa imitation to match what he was seeing. The fly took a few years to find its final shape - early versions tried to copy the natural pupa's wing buds and legs, but by the early '80s it had settled into the much simpler form it's tied in today.
Bergquist himself called it the "Floating Pupa," but a friend of his tried it, realised what he had on his hands, and renamed it Superpuppan - the Super Pupa. The name stuck, and so has the fly it's always been hugely popular in Sweden and Denmark, and has now made its way into North American and Eastern European fly boxes too. However, it's nowhere near as widely fished here in the UK as it deserves to be - we're aiming to alter that!
It seems that the key to this pattern is the way it is tied, and then the hackles are trimmed both top and bottom - allowing the fly to lay as flat as possible on the water:

We've just received these from 'our man in Bosnia' - after his hearty recommendation - apparently they are taking over Eastern Europe!
The hook he's used is the AHREX FW505 - short in shank but seriously strong, so you've got a compact, natural profile without giving up anything when a proper trout decides to test it. The trimmed palmered hackle/legs are premium Whiting Grizzly hackle, tied dense, because a pupa without lively, mobile legs is just a lump of dubbing - the movement on the surface of the water is what does the work.
Our Bosnian SupaPupa Selection consists of 12 flies, 3 each of 4 separate patterns:
• The Olive SupaPupa - Dyed olive hare's mask dubbing, close to the natural shade of most caddis pupae. Your clear-water, selective-fish fly.
• The Yellow SupaPupa - Pine squirrel and synthetic dubbing blended together, lifelike but with a bit more visibility.
• The Pine SupaPupa - Pine squirrel and synthetic again, matching the natural tones of an emerging pupa. The most "match the hatch" of the four.
• The Red SupaPupa - The odd one out, and deliberately so. A bright attractor that'll often pull a strike when the fish have gone off the natural.
These flies are all tied on the best lightweight dry fly hooks in the business, the AHREX FW505 Short Shank in a size 16 - they are the perfect size for August & early Septmeber imitations.
"What makes these patterns so special?"
We posed that exact question to our man on the ground, and his reply was -
"It's all to do with the very flat profile of the fly, allowing it to sit as low as possible on the waters surface. The key to this pattern is to only use a Premium-Grade Grizzly Hackle they are expensive, but well worth if for this style of pattern. And use the best quality, short-shank dry fly hooks in the smaller size - preferably the AHREX Short Shank (FW505)."]

The Bosnian SupaPupa
When the levels start to reduce and the flows slow down, it's time to reach for the pupa patterns, especially effective when fished on a longer leader.
Each patterns is tied with a different body colour, Pine, Olive, Red or Yellow. Each pattern also has the hackle clipped (top and bottom) to allow the fly to sit flat on the water surface.
Top Tip: Fish these patterns on a long, fine leader with a drag-free drift, allowing the fly to sit naturally in the film. They can also be twitched gently at the end of the drift to imitate the final struggle of an emerging fly breaking free from its nymphal shuck.
