Storm Chandra Has Just Done Us A Favour

Storm Chandra Has Just Done Us A Favour

Morning,

Storm Chandra has just done what every grayling angler secretly loves - turned our rivers into chocolate, scattered the fair-weather anglers, and set the table for some of the most productive fishing of the entire winter.

In about 7 days, when the rivers drop back to that perfect 'murky-brown' stage, grayling will be gorging on worms. Thousands of them, washed from bankside soil and flooded fields, tumbling along the riverbed.

And if you don't have worm patterns in your box right now, you're about to miss it.

Please Note: Please don't fish unless it is safe to do so; any river which has risen above its banks can severely weaken them. Please be careful when walking/wading in or near recently flooded rivers.

While trout might be off the menu at this time of year, grayling are in their prime. They're feeding heavily through winter, building condition, and they're far less cautious than their summer selves.

After a storm like Chandra, grayling aren't being selective. They're being opportunistic. The water's carrying enough colour to give them confidence, enough food to make them competitive, and enough current to concentrate them in their classic winter lies.

It's about as close to "easy mode" as grayling fishing gets.

Introducing ... The Derwent Worm

Red-Neck Hare's Ear Tungsten Nymph Kit

Our Derwent Worm was designed for exactly this.

We released these patterns bck in September, specifically for post-storm conditions on spate rivers (though they work anywhere worms get washed in):

  • Weighted - to get down faster to where grayling are holding near the bottom.
  • Natural colourways - match the real worms grayling are seeing (except the Chartreuse/White one - that's more of a nod to the Cat's Whisker).
  • Durable construction - because you'll be bouncing bottom through rocks and debris
  • Barbless hooks - AHREX barbless hooks, only the best, obviously.

We tied these from experience, not theory. Every winter, after big rain events, this pattern accounts for more grayling than anything else in my box. Not the prettiest fishing. Not the most technical. But absolutely deadly when conditions align.

The timing window is short.

Here's the problem: everyone waits until they're actually standing by the river, watching worm-feeding conditions, before they realise they need worm patterns. By then, it's too late - you're either fishing with whatever's in your box or you're not fishing at all.

The window after Chandra will be maybe 7 days of prime conditions before the rivers clear completely and grayling go back to being more selective.

There's something about these patterns that drives fish absolutely wild when the leaves start turning. Whether it's the naturalistic wiggle, or simply that they look like they've had a proper adventure just getting into the water (they work equally as well on both rivers and stillwaters). The undoubted star-of-the-show with this fly pattern is the hook - a size 12 AHREX FW525 - strong, sharp and just the perfect shape.

We perfected the "haphazard" look (which, ironically, took quite a bit of careful tying to achieve), and I'm delighted to share our Derwent Worm Selection with you.

Each one is tied on those superb AHREX FW525 barbless hooks which are just the right shape for 'worm style' patterns, you'll wonder why you ever used anything else.

Please Note: Even though these patterns were devised (and tested) on a Yorkshire River, they are exceptional Stillwater patterns - fish them as close to the bottom as you can and give them a twitch every now and then!

Stock is limited because, honestly, we didn't expect another major storm system this early in the year. When these sell out (and after Chandra, they will), we won't be tying more until Autumn.

We've only got 20 of these Derwent Worm Selections remaining. Our Derwent Worm Selection contains 3 each of the 3 colours (Olive, Chartreuse & Earth) - all tied on AHREX FW525 size 12 barbless hooks - the best in the business.

That's nine flies in total, for only £17.50 delivered in our eco-friendly packaging free of charge to anywhere in the UK.

As always, all of our flies are delivered FREE of charge to anywhere within the UK (which can take up to 7 working days) - we also have a subsidised 1st Class Tracked Service (for only £1.95) which is usually delivered the very next day, so long as you can order before 1pm.

Please Remember: We've only 20 of these selections available, so if you want a set, you will need to be quick - these flies can also be bought individually here if you would like to top up your selection!

One promise: If you buy these, fish them in the right conditions, and don't catch grayling - I'll be genuinely surprised. This isn't marketing hyperbole. This is pattern-meets-conditions reliability that grayling anglers have relied on for generations.

The river's given us an opportunity. Don't let it pass because you weren't prepared.

Tight lines, have fun & be safe.

P.S. Want to know how best to fish the Derwent Worms:

Short leader (7-8ft max), dead drift, fish the smooth glides and pool tails where grayling stack up in winter. They'll be tight to the bottom in 3-6 feet of water, often in pods, competing for food.

When you find one feeding grayling, there are usually more. Work the spot thoroughly.

The classic grayling takes will be there - that gentle tap-tap or just the line stopping. Strike on anything suspicious. In coloured water with worms tumbling through, grayling will hook themselves if you're paying attention.
