The Ultimate Sedge/Caddis Selection

The Ultimate Sedge/Caddis Selection - from Barbless Flies

August and September belong to the sedges. As the mayfly memory fades and the rivers settle into that slower, warmer late-summer rhythm, it's the caddis that keep things interesting - fluttering, skittering, doing everything they can to avoid being eaten, and mostly failing.

This selection is built around that. Six patterns, thirty flies, covering the way sedges actually behave through this part of the season - from the moment they're stuck in the film to the moment they're bombing across the surface trying to escape a hungry trout.

The above price includes 30 Sedge/Caddis patterns supplied in our eco-friendly packaging.

Our Ultimate Sedge/Caddis selection includes two of each of the following:

  • Rolls Royce Caddis - in sizes 14, 16 & 18
  • Indicator Caddis - in sizes 14, 16 & 18
  • Elk & CdC Caddis - in sizes 14, 16 & 18
  • March Brown CdC - in sizes 14, 16 & 18
  • Duracell Jig - in sizes 14 & 18
  • Mayfly Nymph - in size 14

In total, there are 30 Caddis imitations in this selection, supplied in our eco-friendly packaging (or one of our nice Slimline Silicone Fly Boxes).

Descriptions, links and photos of the patterns can be found below:

Rolls-Royce Caddis - Earns its name for a reason. A beautifully proportioned, high-floating pattern that sits the way a natural sedge sits, not the way we'd like it to. When fish are looking up but being fussy about it, this is the one that gets refused the least. This selection contains 2 each of sizes 14, 16 & 18.

Indicator Caddis - The workhorse. Buoyant enough to fish on its own, visible enough to hold as a dry-dropper point fly if the light's against you. Late summer evenings on UK rivers rarely give you long to see anything, so this one earns its keep. This selection contains 2 each of sizes 14, 16 & 18.

Elk & CdC Caddis - The classic elk hair silhouette with a CdC twist for a bit more movement and a lower-riding profile. Good for the flatter, more selective water where a straight elk hair caddis sometimes looks a size too obvious. This selection contains 2 each of sizes 14, 16 & 18.

March Brown CdC - Not a caddis at all, strictly speaking, but it's in here because August and September aren't only about sedges, and this pattern quietly out-fishes its reputation on its day, particularly in broken water where fish don't have long to decide. This selection contains 2 each of sizes 14, 16 & 18.

Duracell Jig - For when the caddis emergence has fish looking down as much as up. A weighted jig nymph to search the water column while you wait for things to happen on top, or to switch to entirely when they don't. This selection contains 2 each of each sizes 14 & 18.

Mayfly Nymph - The odd one, and I know it. Late-season fish still remember what a big nymph looks like, and this one covers you on the rivers where a size 14 nymph gets eaten out of habit as much as hunger. This selection contains 2 of size 14.

I've put this selection together the way I'd actually fish these two months myself - mostly caddis, because that's what's on the water, with a couple of patterns thrown in because fish don't read the calendar as closely as we do.

The above price includes 30 flies supplied in our eco-friendly packaging.

All of our flies are shipped in eco-friendly packaging and delivered FREE of charge to anywhere within the UK.

Note: Should the "Tree Trout" steal any of your flies, we also have these flies available to buy individually - click here to see them.
