"White Label" Mono Tapered Leaders — Because Not Everything Needs a Backstory
Let me be straight with you: these leaders aren't hand-crafted by a Swiss watchmaker in a mountain retreat. There's no heritage marketing guff, no celebrity endorsement, and no logo embossed on the packet.
What there is, though, is a properly made mono tapered leader that does exactly what a tapered leader is supposed to do - turn your fly over cleanly at the end of a cast.
I've been using them myself and honestly, I was pleasantly surprised.
The taper is smooth and progressive, the mono has a nice suppleness that doesn't fight you, and the turnover is as tidy as leaders costing twice the price.
Available in 9ft and 12ft lengths, and in 3X, 4X, 5X and 6X diameters, there's a size to suit just about any river or stillwater situation you're likely to find yourself in this season.
Sometimes a thing just works. These are those things.
Which diameter should you choose?
As a rough guide:
- 3X suits heavier nymphs and larger wet flies
- 4X is a solid all-rounder for most Trout and Grayling fishing
- 5X steps things up for dries and lighter nymphs
- 6X is your choice when the water's clear, the fish are educated, and you need finesse over force.
As always, match the tippet to the fly, not your confidence levels!

Tapered Leader to Fly Line Connections:
Most fly lines now come with a welded loop at the tip, I find the best way to attach your tapered leader is to tie a perfection loop (click here for tying instructions) in the butt end of your leader, and then use a loop-to-loop connection to attach it to your fly line. This way has the added advantage that should you wish to change your leader (for a longer/shorter/thinner one), then it's simply a case of loop-to-loop connecting the new leader.
Should your fly line not already have a welded loop on the tip, then my favourite way to attach a tapered leader is with a needle knot (click here for a fantastic demo of the Needle Knot).
