Our 'man in Bosnia' has been at it again - with some more very tempting nymphs - especially tied for success in the winter.
We try to plan all of our fly selection at least 3 months in advance, when asked what we were planning for winter fishing, we wanted to do something a little different, so we asked him to surprise us and tie something which he would use himself, in Bosnia during winter.
His reply was "I will tie you 4 secret patterns, which are the first nymphs I try on any river" - this had us intrigued, as we had no photos to go on, so we trusted his judgement and said, "go for it". The first time we saw these was when they were delivered to on Friday morning - we were impressed!
Here's a little more detail on each of the flies contained within the selection:
This collection of four hand-tied nymphs is designed specifically for autumn grayling fishing. All patterns are tied on the Demon G610 size 16 hook – a strong, beautifully shaped hook with a wide gape that ensures excellent hooking, even with the delicate takes typical of grayling.
Each fly is weighted with a 2.3 mm gold tungsten bead for perfect balance and depth, while a touch of fluorescent orange thread behind the bead creates a vivid hot spot that works as an irresistible trigger in clear or slightly tinted autumn water.
The tying process begins with a smooth foundation of GSP 30D thread. The tail is made from Grizzly Metz hackle fibres, giving the nymph a lively and natural movement. Along with the tail, a fine copper wire and a Wapsi March Brown biot are tied in. The body is formed with a thin layer of dubbing and then covered with the biot and ribbed with the copper wire, which strengthens the fly and forms a beautiful segmented back.
Each colour variant uses the same structure but a different dubbing blend for the body and thorax:
- Natural Squirrel – subtle, natural shades that imitate many river nymphs.
- Pink UV – a vibrant attractor version that stands out in deeper or shaded pools.
- Rusty Brown – a warm, earthy tone perfect for low, clear autumn water.
- Violet UV – a darker, subtle hue with gentle UV reflection, ideal for selective grayling.
The thorax is covered with black flat braid and sealed with a thin layer of Raidzap UV resin, creating a glossy, durable finish that perfectly mimics the sheen of a natural insect’s shell.
