Luke Bannister's 8' #4 - A rod dedicated to the small stream/river fly angler
I got the chance to take Luke Bannister's new rod for a spin on my local water - the river was up to the banks, the colour of a pint of Mild and there was no chance of a fish, but I was itching to get out and give Luke's rod a cast, to see what I thought to it.
I strung it up with one of our 'General Purpose' 4wt floating lines and set about practising my casting - it seems like ages since I tied on a dry fly to my leader!
I was impressed. It's not quite got the same feel to it as my Scott G-Series that I would normally reach for - but it wasn't far from it!
It made light work of pitching a dry fly into the wind and presenting it nicely on the brown muddy stretch of water we used to call the Derwent.
It felt nice in the hand and the fixtures and fitting were all top quality.
It turns out that, quite by chance, Luke came across some really nice blanks (which are perfect for fishing on smaller rivers and streams) and had a factory make up the rods to his exacting specifications - eye type and placement on the blank specifically for shorter rods fishing at close-range, a deep burgundy finish (including alignment dots), a gorgeous wood inlaid reel seat and a good cork slim handle - all presented in a Cordura segmented rod tube.
