The Depth Charge Jig Selection

The Depth Charge Jig Selection - from Barbless Flies

Twelve compact, heavy jig nymphs in four colours: Pink, Olive, Rust and Cahill. Three of each, all tied on size 14 jig hooks, built to get down fast and fish deep.

The Depth Charge Jig is a small, heavy nymph for fishing close to the bottom. A heavy(ish) bead takes it down quickly, even in the deeper runs. The size 14 jig hook rides point-up, so it works through rocks and snags that would hold a standard hook.

The body is a sparkly, buggy dubbing under a translucent shellback, with a dark collar swept back from the bead. It’s slim enough to look like food and heavy enough to get to where the fish are.

Fish it Euro-style on a tight line or as the point fly under an indicator. It works for trout and grayling, in water from shallow riffles to deep runs.

What’s in the selection

• Pink - A grayling favourite. Good in coloured water after rain, and when the river looks like tea.
• Olive - The quiet all-rounder. Suggests a small olive nymph or caddis larva, and it’s a good choice in clear, low water.
• Rust - An orange-brown body with a rusty shellback. Suits autumn and stained water, and could pass for a stonefly or caddis pupa.
• Cahill - A pale cream and ginger body with a golden back. A subtle option when the fish are being a little fussy.

A typical characteristic of this style of nymph is the slim profile (to allow it to sink quickly), a back covered with foil/latex/shellback, all tied on a jig hook.
