The Tups Indispensable - One of the most famous trout flies of all time. This fly was created in the 1890s by the tobacconist and a part-time professional fly tier R. S. Austin in Tiverton, Devon, England and is most effective when trout are taking pale midges or mayflies
The fly had a very unusual source for its tying material - hairs from a ram's scrotum! A fly tyer collecting dubbing materials in the 1890s would have to have his excuses ready, just in case, he got caught by the police (or even worse, by the farmer)!
The dressing for the Tups Indispensable was kept a secret by Mr Austin. Later, the exact dressing was only known to a few select anglers: Skues, another fly-dresser - Mr C.A. Hassam, and Mr Austin's daughter. (she also took over the fly tying business after her father's death, and continued tying and selling the 'Tups' with just a few minor changes). Upon her retirement in 1934, Miss Austin gave permission to publish the correct dressing of Tup's Indispensable to G.E.M. Skues.
