The Barbless Sili-Worm Selection
These Sili-Worms are tried and tested on both Grayling and Trout (Rainbow & Brown) with great success, a twist on a classic worm imitation.
We know some people class using this style of fly as "cheating", but don't worry, we won't tell anyone if you don't - we can also mail them in plain packaging, so even the postman doesn't know!
These nymphs are tied based on competition experience, originally developed for early-season trout (and late-season grayling) when fish are searching for consistent food, the water is generally high and coloured. This fly is a must-have for anybody who wants to catch fish. With very high mobility in water (due to the material used).
This style of 'Squirmy' nymph has been very popular for the last few years, when some international competitors won using it when other nymphs and flies failed. The flies are tied on barbless hooks.
How to use them:
- Sili-Worms work for both trout and grayling
- Use the Sili-Worm when the level of water is higher than normal
- Sili-Worms should also be used also when water is coloured
- Always use as a point nymph, with a lighter fly on a dropper (where allowed)
Attention:
- On some waters in the UK, this fly is banned so please check before you use it
- Do not expose the fly to excessive sunlight, as this can degrade the silicone
The blank saver - Very often used in competitions whenever the conditions are less than optimal and are often a blank saving fly!
How to fish them:
On Stillwaters - All of these patterns are best fished on a sinking line and shortish leader. Once on the bottom of the lake bed, make a slow (but jerky) retrieve and wait for the take! These flies imitate the bloodworm which is found in the lake beds, when disturbed they move in exactly the same way as the flexi-floss.
On Rivers - These flies are most effective in high water (or after a flood/rise in water) when it's going down and clearing, they usually attract the bigger fish when used in the bigger sizes (8 and 10), the smaller sizes (12 and 14) are really effective on clearer water. Where these patterns really come into their own is in smaller rivers with high soil banks where real worms are washed from banks. Use the bigger sizes as a point fly in deeper holes, and the smaller sizes as a general dropper (smaller sizes can imitate a bloodworm).
