"Great session at Leechpool Farm (Norrington Common, Broughton Gifford) late afternoon/evening. Fifteen+ Mirror and Common carp up to 5lb+ all on size 10 Dog biscuit. Good fishing conditions with plenty of riffles, I only fed a couple of handfuls of small mixer all evening. I used the same fly all the time, dried it regularly and used fish-pimp crystals to keep it buoyant. Well tied, robust flies." - Richard Cripps, August 2016

The Barbless Carp Selection, we thought it was about time that we started to offer flies for the angler that likes to target coarse fish. So here we present a selection of barbless carp flies all tied right here in the UK, and tied in the most popular patterns, and as always we offer free delivery to anywhere in the world.

Carp fishing has grown to be the most popular coarse fishing activity. Carp fishing using a fly is also increasing in popularity both with the fly and coarse angler. Here we have a selection of the most common carp flies, tied in sizes 8 and 10 on super strong barbless hooks. Carp are generally more confident to take a fly presented bait, as this lands more gently on the water (takes are usually just after the fly has landed). Using this approach allows you to present the fly in the gentlest way possible.

The equipment required for this is:

  • Fly rod in the 7 to 9 weight range
  • Fly line to match your fly rod (either WF or DT)
  • A tapered leader (between 8 and 15lb)
  • Strong tippet (usually 2 or 3lb lighter than the tapered leader)
  • Unhooking mat
  • Bait catapult
  • A very large net!
  •

Having such a lack of tackle allows you to roam the lake and target fish to cast to. The general technique is to stalk a likely fish and then offer some free bait (bread, dog biscuits etc), then match your fly to the bait you have offered, wait for the carp to start taking the free offerings and then cast to the taking fish. Lots more detail can be found in the excellent book by Dominick Garnett, "FlyFishing for Coarse Fish" - available from Coch-Y-Bonduu here.

Descriptions and photo's of the flies can be found below:

Indicator Bonio. Tied to represent a dog biscuit from the famous brand, and slightly lighter in colour to the normal Dog Biscuit fly. It has a vivid orange sight marker built-in, allowing you to easily recognise takes when the fly is far away. The selection contains two each of size 10.

Two-Tone Bread. Tied to represent a generic "white bread with crust". It has a bright red sight marker built-in, allowing you to easily recognise takes when the fly is far away. The selection contains two each of size 10.

Striped Biscuit. Its striped appearance allows you to easily recognise takes when the fly is far away. The selection contains two each of size 10.

Indicator Bread. Tied to represent a small piece of white bread, another one of the most popular flies when fishing for carp. Tied with a red indicator, allowing you to easily recognise takes when the fly is far away. The selection contains two each of size 10.

Note: Should the "Tree Trout" steal any of your flies, I am happy to sell flies individually to allow you to top up your box. Please contact me using this link with details of your order, and I will email you a paypal invoice. Carp flies can be bought for £1.50 per fly.

The above price includes 8 hand-tied (in the UK) carp flies supplied in our eco-friendly packaging.

We currently have these fly selections in stock and will ship these to you as soon as we receive notification of your payment, generally if a payment is made in the morning your flies will be with you the very next day. All products from Barbless-Flies are shipped free of charge to anywhere in the world.
